Changelings

Changeling.
Changelings are subtle shape-shifters capable of disguising their appearance. Their ability to adopt other creatures’ guises makes them consummate spies and criminals. Often cursed and shunned by humans for their abilities to deceive there has been little recorded of this secretive race. It is known that many follow the 'dead' goddess Leira, Lady of the Mists or Mask, the Prince of Thieves, however their exact habits and social interactions are largely unknown. It has been postulated by scholars that they must inhabit tightly guarded communal cave systems of the Upper Dark, just below or nearby human habitation. 

At the Eastern end of the Lake of Steam there existed some 550 years ago the kingdom of Thalasia. The people were predominantly human or elven in origin, however the monarchy and ruling class were exclusively changelings. The environment then was highly volcanic, and earthquakes, steam vents and magma eruptions common. Not surprisingly these changelings adopted an animist style religion placing the Lords of the Elemental Plane of Fire at the head of their pantheon. Whether to appease the mountains' fury or harness it is unknown as this society was completely wiped out in the conflagration known to Western scholars as the Mt. Rothoa Eruption and locals as The Ash Wars.

Remnants of this civilisation can be found in the University and occasionally mines of Kordova, City of Jewels, and also at Valda near the base of Mt. Rothoa. Scholars have reported temple like structures on islands west of Rishadan, though the origin of these has not been verified.

By tradition the descendants of the human survivors of he destruction of Thalasia have always shunned shape changers ever since. According to local folklore the Thalasia changelings caused the cataclysm of fire and ash that enveloped the kingdom by inciting the Lords of the Elements to do battle against their enemies. These unnamed foes summoned Devils from the Infernal Hells to combat the Elemental magics and it was the resulting discharges of power that caused the upheaval of the earth. A preposterous story but one that must stand in for truth as the records of the time are unreliable or non-existent. Whatever the case, Shape Changing (and shape-changers) of all forms are outlawed under pain of death within the Kordian Hegemony, as are Tieflings or other Infernal sentients.

As a changeling, you have the following racial traits.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity and Charisma scores increase by 1.
Size. Changelings are built much like humans, but a little leaner. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Duplicity. You gain proficiency in the Deception skill.
Shapechanger. As an action, you can polymorph into any humanoid of your size that you have seen, or back into your true form. However, your equipment does not change with you. If you die, you revert to your natural appearance.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and two other basic languages of your choice.
