The Destiny of Kord

Traversing the Border Kingdoms
Vignette 9 - Friends on the Road (PC Intro).

Mid-Morning – 21st Flamerule 472KR, (The Past), Close to the border of Ondeeme and the Barony of Great Oak, "Border Kingdoms".

Story: Across the stony contours of the hills on the northern edge of the flatlands people call the Western Shaar, Snaedis Alavara, ranger and wanderer in the wilds plotted her course with the nonchalant care of someone at their complete ease. As a person of the cities might recognise the voices of friends or family, the familiar streets and alleys of their home, Snaedis heard the voices of the creatures, the plants and the long slow groan of the hot sleepy hills around her. The sun was bright and kissed her weathered skin with a delightful warmth, though the cloudless sky held the promise of baking temperatures later in the day. For now, with breezes lightly wafting and blowing the dried seed pods of Puff-Dragons about the brown grass, the hills were a pleasant place and ahead in the far distance the eaves of a vast ancient forest could be seen.

Snaedis absently reached down to scratch the top of Mordai's head, smoothing his ears and finding the spot he could never reach. The large, oddly angular looking canine growled happily deep in his throat. A sound not un-reminiscent of a large cat. Mordai raised his squarish jaw, eyes darting to the movements of a family of voles some thirty feet from the 'trail'. In an instant Mordai disappeared, as always leaving the faintest of odours, fresh grass, leaves and spice-wine, behind him, though Snaedis was almost sure she only imagined these scents. She smiled as he reappeared, blinking back into the Material, just above the family of rodents and watched him jump back and forth like a puppy, tongue lolling as the smaller creatures scurried for their burrows. With the promise of an afternoon's cool walk through shady glades rather than the rocky scrub of the past few days the two friends continued north skirting depressions and meandering toward the forest's edge.

Features:

Snaedis 'tames' a semi-wild and half grown Wyvern(ling?) with food and soft words, allowing her and Mordai to concentrate on the well armed Vorok and his goblin hirelings. A couple of vicious half-hearted strikes were the Wyvern's only efforts beyond consuming the leg of 'donkey' and pile of dried fruits and bread donated kindly by our Ranger. After vanquishing Vorok, Snaedis, Mordai and the bewildered Ariella were able to sneak northward toward the forest road, leaving the young beast to finish it's meal (and presumably the goblinoid corpses) in peace.

No great scholar, Snaedis does however know a marker when she sees it, memorising the elvish script (Auld Common words) above the tomb door before fleeing inside to avoid the bulk of the Stony Hill tribe. Confronted by a magical portcullis, she immediately utters part of the entrance phrase and the barrier magically rises, revealing more of the ancient complex known as the 'Tomb of Arralt'.

Active Characters:

Snaedis AlavaraMordai the Blink Dog.

Off Characters:

None.

NPC's:

Ariella (Lady of Ondeeme), Kerswyck (a reclusive druid), Rhodoban (a rescued human bard), Marle (the 'King of the Forest') & Vorok the Despoiler (deceased half-orc marauder).

Rumours:

Snaedis has recently 'escaped' the clutches of the Stony Hill goblin tribe and their overweight monarch, Khurm. She has passed two significant goblinoid settlements and noted the increase in humanoid activity here on the edges of civilisation and the vastness of the Western Shaar. Given the state of the Border Kingdoms and the continued fighting between Derlusk and Kordova to the north-east any influx of humanoid tribes to the area may go unnoticed for some time.

Experience:

2750 XP for each (Snaedis) ACTIVE CHARACTER.

Items:

Charlatan's Dice, Medium Shield +1, Antidote Potion.

Post-Game:

None (Narrative halted – Evening 24th Flamerule). Snaedis and her companions find themselves in the beginnings of an ancient underground complex. The way behind barred by a tribe of Stony Hill Goblins and a 'half-giant', they have resolved to explore the 'Tomb of Arralt' for an alternative exit. Or at least wait until the goblins (who will not follow inside the tomb) get bored and leave.

GM's Note: With thanks to the original creator of this 'Adventure' (Fighter's Challenge II) – Drew Bittner. It's an old favourite 2nd Edition single character module that I've then; rules, geography and NPC ported into 5th Ed. Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle.

Escorting Lady Carmino
Catch-Up Vignette 5 - "Many Hands by the Lake"

Late Afternoon – 21st Elesias 472KR, Fletcher's Square, The Warrens, Kordova.

Story: Not even a whisper of breeze penetrated the fetid and oozing streets of the Twists, as Erro briskly made his way from their narrow alleyways and onto the larger avenue that led to the Warrens and Etto Parade. Crossing the Warren’s largest street he came to an area with which he was very familiar, despite the visual and aesthetic changes in recent weeks. Where formerly the byways and streets around Fletcher’s Square had been indistinguishable from the rest of the slums, there was now a pocket of relative prosperity, clean walkways and freshly painted shops. His goal was the centre of this 'revival'; the residence known as Derneal’s Rest, his headquarters for the burgeoning quasi-religious group, The Many Hands of Waukeen.

Features:

Erro - Puts in a bid for a 'Turanian Mile' record and runs down a Werewolf, ripping into the creature with Spear and Fists of Pure Force to rescue Adana from it's claws. With a head start and a struggling noble-woman across it's shoulders the forest beckoned, but Erro had other plans for the creature…

Bors – Proves to be a capable warrior and leader of men. Perhaps Erro should spend some time with the ex-legionary turned Waukeenite Hand.

Session 18 "The Death of Lord Caldan Hermetta"

Late-Night - 20th Elesias 472KR, Beneath Kordova, 'Beyond the Forbidden Gates'.

Story: An eerie quiet greeted the cautious members of the Sunset Wanderers as they descended the spiraling stone stair to a chamber of ruined columns, smashed urns and the rubble of Kordova's previous 'incarnations'. The tracks they had been following progressed directly through a stone pivot door, similar to those others used during the earlier dynasties of Kordova. To the left of their descent a massive set of Bronze Doors, barricaded shut with an iron bar and leaden seals upon which could still be seen runic inscriptions of prayer and abjuration to maintain the integrity of this portal for all time. Sharah Bloodcast drew a small lock-pick and probe from her belt-kit. She exhaled slightly, pushing the tools delicately inside the over-large keyhole and lock mechanism…

Exploration Notes:

During at least four separate 'missions' the Sunset Wanderers have built up a reasonably accurate picture of the tunnels, city layers and strata beneath Kordova. To date (Elesias 23rd) they have explored much of the accessible areas, however there remains beneath the city:

Two sets of Substantial Bronze Doors, locked and with attendant spaces, corridors and chasms. These pre-date the 'Forbidden' and Kord periods of our timeline and may even pre-date the Thalasian Kingdom which stood before.

A section of hastily piled rubble, cutting off the corridors(?) beyond. This was discovered near the chasm chosen as a defensible location by the house guards and hirelings of clan Hermetta.

One corridor and 'garbage' shoot. Upstairs, leading from the 'Forbidden' street level to the barred stone doors set by the Kings following Drazzar. Almost definitely some sort of monster's lair.

A second set of deep corridors, far beneath occupation strata in the Underdark proper. A destroyed market. Lines of dull slaves. And evidence of an ancient civilisation (Clay Statuette) that is either being imitated or has been found again.

Features:

Sharah - Spontaneously utters the secret words of passage that bar the way from the remade Throne Room of King Drazzar, circumventing the Guardians placed there and revealing not one but two ways forward. 'Inspirational' adventuring from our 'jill-of-all-trades'.

Derenteriel - Struggles between the 'Appropriate Action' and the whispers of his Patron Arri'adnaea, eventually (after some internal debate) declining to push their prisoner (Micah Hermetta) into the flaming abyss above which they stood. (His Lady would need to be sated at a later time, and she is not a patient Mistress).

Keldan - Faces a dilemna of duty and faith. His King, albeit a 'trifle' worked up at the time, all but ordered Keldan to arrange for the arrest, detention and subsequent execution of the extant members of clan Hermetta, excepting the person of Ernesto, his new-son-in-law. Although Lord Darvan and Sharah were able to mollify King Ottovar, does the 'order' still stand? Is this a way to impress his liege? Should he consult his superior, Sedero Ma?

Kosef - Saves the life of one of their 'adversaries' a half-naked acolyte, hovering between this form and that of her true Changeling self as she lay on the floor expiring from the wound inflicted in the swirling melee by the great lava tube in the centre of Hermetta's shrine to Drazzar and Gargaash. Later, we find the unrestrained Changeling, Jul'Mae Terrine and Kosef headed north from Kordova unbeknownst to all of the Sunset Wanderers.

Evnarra - Clears the way forward across the chasm being defended by stout Hermetta guards. A conflagration envelopes their prepared defenses and those who are not immediately consumed emerge flaming, dazed and soon expire from their injuries. It would seem that our little Deep Gnome has learnt her lessons regarding the size and destructive nature of the new surface magics she is studying.

Derenteriel Eanderel, Evnarra Rockcutter, Keldan Stillspark, Kosef Mara, Sharah Bloodcast

NPC's:

Lord Caldan Hermetta, Princess Tevalya Altan, Prince Consort Ernesto Hermetta nae Altan, Jul’Mae Terrine, Micah Hermetta, King Ottovar Altan I, Lord Darvan Muertollia.

Rumours:

At least 10-12 Family Members of the Clan Hermetta remain either huddled in their Citadel compound (Carmino District) or have fled the city.

The Sunset Wanderers did not find the Stone of Ash within the complex, nor the Saviour Priest described to Sharah in the sacred cave at the abandoned village of Marran. It is fairly certain, upon later reflection, that the deep lava tube found in Caldan Hermetta's shrine was created by the Stone of Ash. All past information and study would make the tube a copy of others discovered by the Wanderers in previous Cult complexes and refuges. The one significant difference being the presence of liquid magma, perhaps indicating a more recent genesis for this feature.

Catch-Up Vignette 4 - "Cathrykan and Company"

Afternoon – 20th Elesias, 472KR, The Citadel, Kordova.

Story: A distinct and icy chill noise of small, sharply filed metal chains and religious accouterments accompanied Cathrykan as she 'stomped' happily down the velvet carpet of the hall. A smile of self-satisfaction emerged slightly at the corners of her elegant high-boned mouth as certain courtiers simpered or waved as their preference dictated. Behind her she heard the barely concealed snort of derision from Ser Andros (apologies; Ser Andario of Helm) as a smirk cleft his handsome but cruel features. Inwardly Cathrykan approved, he was after all a dedicated follower of Her Lady. However she much preferred Treava's cautious and respectful observances, or Sallamrykan's outright ambition and kinship,  to the calculating gaze of the commoner-cum-noble from Torsch. Still, allies were allies, proof just ahead as she adjusted her skirts and cast a studied eye over the group surrounding Queen Sydana during this most trying of hours.

Despite the attack at the Colosseum and the disappearance of the Princess Tevalya and her newly wedded Prince Hermetta, Sydana had found some time to change into a garb reminiscent of a widow's dress, the exception being the high cut side slits and elegant silver thread chasings that accentuated her pale skin and long limbs. With her entourage behind her, Cathrykan pushed past the flattery and blathering of minor courtiers and presented herself with flawless curtsey and grace before Her Majesty.

"Cathrykan, how timely. I have been looking for a man of action, and as usual find myself bereft, or with too many heading in the wrong direction. Such is our lot I fear…" Sydana quiped, with venom in her eyes for the nobles beyond their own small group.

As most of the Sunset Wanderers and a nervous Silvio were beyond the doors with King Ottovar, Lord Muertollia and other luminaries, Cathrykan and those close to the Queen formed an island of relative calm. The long-disused 'Broken Hall' filled to its brim with courtiers and legionaries seethed with conversation and conjecture, until those stout ancient doors to the 'Old Court' were thrown wide. Commotion and incoherent ravings in the King's voice could be heard, along with the forceful yet placating tones of Darvan Muertollia.

With a crowd between her entourage and the doors, Cathrykan hung by the Queen's side, eyeing the reactions of courtier and servant alike. Her observation was abruptly ended by the sight of a confused looking, yet immaculately presented Calaith, cutting an impossible line from the doors to her royal group, eyes a little misted as usual and his fine elven face drawn as if from some malady. Men looked at him askance, and the ladies of the Queen's solar sighed as the darkly jacketed and pale featured elf approached his companion. Cathrykan inwardly noted the touch of an arm here, the slight adjustment of hair or bodice there and likewise the oblivious and determined gaze of Calaith, his eyes haunted and a little strange.

____________________________________________________________

Queen Sydana greeted the two courtly Sunset Wanderers warmly despite her preoccupation with the abduction of her daughter and the now very audible ravings of her enraged husband. With cool poise she took Calaith and Cathrykan into her group of followers, culling some of the sycophants and hangers-on with a withering gaze and preemptory command. Those left, including Cathrykan's small entourage, were led by Queen Sydana from the Old Palace and into a series of inter-connected cloisters and corridors which became more well appointed as they moved into the Halls dating from the time of Markovar II and then the splashy and gilded sections built for Ottovar and Sydana in recent years. Their destination was known to Cathrykan and Calaith, the carven solar that hung along the south wall of the White Tower, overlooking the bluffs of the Citadel and the Clifftower below.

The Missing Newly Weds
Session 17 - "Chasing the Flames"

Afternoon – 20th Elesias, 472KR, The Citadel, Kordova.

Story: Hastening directly from the partially shattered Colosseum, the bulk of the Sunset Wanderers, led by a purposeful Lord Muertollia, began to ascend the well cobbled paths upward to the citadel pushing through the distressed crowds. City-folk and visitors alike were being herded by members of the Burning Spear Legion toward the suburbs surrounding the "The Circus District" and the armed adventurers found themselves in a sea of populace until they arrived at the high University Gates on the citadel's northwestern arm.

Burning Spear veterans drew back to allow them quick passage, Lord Muertollia's demeanour brooking no interruption as they made their way through leafy streets and byways to the ancient Old Court, still moldering next to its flashy and oversized successor. Up cramped twisting stairs they emerged into an antechamber with guarded archway that they were immediately admitted through. Inside a plain audience hall, lacking much of the ostentation of the Altan regime, the King, Ottovar Altan and his immediate confidants were involved in a highly charged discussion.

________

Meanwhile, Kosef Mara, changeling and denizen of the Kordovan stews, had been absent since very shortly after the attack at the Colosseum. Having paid close attention to the movements of the extended family Hermetta, he had decided to follow their exit from the Colosseum as soon as was practical. Emerging from a blood spattered access tunnel he quickly donned the guise of an indeterminate tradesman or merchants labourer and set about following the noble clan. After making their way through abandoned stalls and stabling for animals the family Hermetta stopped near a temporary warehouse, where they were met by a strange entourage.

Two heavily cloaked and hooded figures, despite Kordova's summer heat, and a trio of rough looking men in the mismatched armour of professional pit-fighters. On closer inspection Kosef noted a further oddity. Both of the hooded figures had their hoods tightly secured about their necks and were not so much guided, as herded by the men. One stood tall and straight, about the size of a large man, the other diminutive and not much above five feet in height.

After a brief conference most of the female and older members of the clan began to make their way as a group back into the city proper, whilst the younger members made their way with the five new arrivals deeper into the collection of temporary structures and tents erected for the Tourney of the Seven Stars. Using stables, temporary shelters and the discarded trash of the carnival, Kosef made his way behind the smaller group, his eyes darting back and forth for any movement that might presage an ambuscade or the arrival of further quarry.

A partial compound, stock-yard and trade building had been constructed nearest to the outer area of the Tourney’s temporray grounds. Into this building the younger members of the clan Hermetta, the rough men and their charges disappeared, about to slam the door before a slightly puffing and late younger cousin approached, and was under raised eye-brow also admitted.

Wiping the sweat from an unfamiliar weak jaw-line and brow, Kosef took in the corridor, crowded with his ‘family’, the prevalence of weapons and equipment, the strange green glow from the corridor’s end. His new form was cramped and small, typical of these humans with the grace of falling tortoises. Focusing on the present, rather than the deficiencies of his prey, Kosef deftly palmed a dagger and waited for those in front to finish their passage into the room with the mysterious emanations of green light.

An arcane portal, greenish-yellow in the dim ramshackle central room saw

The Ancient Door to the Forbidden has been if not penetrated, then 'jumped-around' by the Party. They now have a clear picture of the sealed sections of the underside of Kordova from the time of the mad-King Drazzar. It would seem that both the cult and the Hermetta clan (in conjunction) have made use of this area, and excavated into those areas beneath the Forbidden that form the oldest parts of Kordova's strata and the Upper-Dark.
